5 amazing things that happened to me in 2016

I’d be remiss if I didn’t take the time to share some of the amazing things to happen to me in the last year. It’s true – humanity faced some incredible challenges in 2016 and, at times, it seemed like we were up against insurmountable odds. But, we’re nothing if not resilient and I’m a firm believer that if you want positivity to reign supreme throughout the world, then it’s your duty to first look inward and find the best parts of yourself. If we can’t see the light around us, how can we ever expect to see it anywhere else?

I left the city I’d called home for the first 25 years of my life and took a huge leap of faith, both in myself and my future, and moved to Toronto to pursue a career I’d been desperate to have for the last few years.

I started and completed the most intensive, exhausting, and rewarding program I’ve ever taken and managed to make forty new friends who, for 9 months, continually challenged me, made me laugh, and impressed me with their rainbow of intellect and their incomparable ambition.

I welcomed a new baby boy into our family. My second sister’s second son brought my rather impressive niece-nephew count to a resounding and accomplished five – something I never thought I’d see, but am more grateful than ever to have. With each new addition you think your family is finally complete and every piece of the familial puzzle has been found – until a new arrival joins you and you can’t believe you ever lived without them.

I found an amazing job in public relations (and discovered Starbucks soy lattes in the process) and can now, without hesitation, tell you that the team I’m lucky enough to work with every single day makes each change I’ve made in 2016 completely worth it. I found a company that put their faith in a newbie like me and continually presses me to work harder and grow faster than I ever thought I could.

I challenged my anxiety – a crippling side-effect of my life that has crushed and created me in more ways than I can count – and somehow came out on the other side stronger, albeit not completely free. I think, more than anything, I’ve realized that it’s not something I’ll ever be entirely of, but it is something that I can face head-on, knowing full-well I won’t break completely.

Tell me: What amazing things happened to you in 2017?
