I think, in my ways, I really used to be the kind of person that scoffed at New Year’s resolutions. My tendency was always towards taking the side of “you can make a change whenever you want – you don’t need a new year for that,” and while that’s still true in many cases, I have to say that I entered 2018 with a deep fire and a vigour for the burgeoning creativity in my life.
It’s no secret that, at my core, I like to create. I blog, I Instagram, I write, I photograph, I edit, I draw – all for some purpose far greater than just myself. I create because it’s what has moved me forward. Everything I am at this very moment – even as I type this – is because of the creative forces I’ve embraced and allowed to move me and guide me.
In 2018, I’m opening myself up to those forces to embrace opportunity, relish in being proactive, and truly manifesting what I want and not stopping until I get it.
With that being said, I wanted to start this year by sharing, with you, a few of my goals for the year. I think I have far more in the back of my brain and some I’ll put down on paper but keep to myself, but as I progress on my journey as a creative, these ones are the most important and for which I want you all to hold me accountable.
Embrace authenticity and shun insecurity
I say “shun” because anyone who says they’re completely devoid of any insecurity is a fucking liar. In 2018, I’m striving to shun those nagging voices that tell me I’m not good enough or that I can’t be exactly what I want to be. Instead, I’ll replace them with a truly authentic version of who I am (though I feel like 95% of what I share is who I really am already). It’s about connecting with who I am and not being afraid to openly share all of me – even the parts that I find uncomfortable.
Organize for the sake of progress
I have a lot going on in my life (especially right now). I’ve been blogging for nearly 10 years and I’ve never been organized. I’ve never planned out a proper editorial calendar or prepared posts a month in advance. Truly, most of what I do is by the seat of my pants. In 2018, I aim to create an organized structure for myself. Not because I think it’s what I should be doing, but because I know it’s what aids true progress.
Finish the book
I won’t say too much on this one, but there’s something I’ve been working on for well over a year now. It’s a work-in-progress and this year, I plan to finish it. Signed, sealed, delivered.
Read more, learn more
It’s no secret that reading (whatever, whenever) is the best way to learn, to grow, to appreciate. With that being said, in 2018, I want to read as much as I can, whether its a raunchy novel about a big city lawyer who moves to the country to learn to bake, or whether it’s a blog post about a pair of stylish shoes. The genre, the outlet – they don’t matter. Absorb knowledge and use it.
